How to Apply Rhinestone & Glitter Transfers: The Complete Heat Press Guide
Rhinestone and glitter heat press transfers deliver professional, sparkling results — but only when applied correctly. Nail the temperature, pressure, and peel technique and your transfers will look stunning and last wash after wash. Get any of those wrong and you risk stones popping off, incomplete adhesion, or scorched fabric.
This guide covers everything you need to apply rhinestone and glitter transfers from Glitzy Bling Transfers with confidence, whether you’re pressing a single shirt or running a team order of 50.
All transfers from Glitzy Bling Transfers are transfers only — you apply them to your own garments using a heat press. This guide assumes you have access to a heat press (not a household iron — see note below).
🛠️ What You’ll Need
- A heat press — a clamshell, swing-away, or draw-style press. Not a household iron — irons do not deliver even, consistent pressure and will produce poor results with rhinestone transfers.
- Your garment — pre-washed and dry. Cotton, cotton-poly blends, and polyester are all suitable for most transfers. Always check the transfer's garment compatibility if pressing on performance fabrics.
- Your rhinestone or glitter transfer — still in its packaging until you’re ready to press.
- A silicone pad or Teflon sheet — to protect rhinestone transfers during pressing (recommended for all rhinestone transfers).
- A tape measure or ruler — to measure placement position before pressing.
- A placement guide (optional) — a cardboard template cut to the transfer dimensions for consistent positioning across team orders.
📏 Step 1: Measure Before You Press
The most common mistake beginners make is skipping the measuring step. Every transfer from Glitzy Bling Transfers includes its dimensions — use them.
- Measure the garment area where you plan to place the transfer (chest width, available height above a pocket or zipper, back panel dimensions)
- Compare against the transfer dimensions listed on the product page
- For centre-chest placement, find the horizontal centre of the garment and mark lightly with a fabric pen or clip
- For youth or child-sized garments, be especially careful — a 10–12" wide transfer can easily overrun a smaller shirt chest
For example, the bestselling CHEER MOM STAR GLITTER & RHINESTONE TRANSFER measures 10" × 10" — that’s a full-front size that works beautifully on an adult hoodie but would be oversized on a youth shirt.

🌡️ Step 2: Pre-Heat Your Press & Pre-Press Your Garment
Heat Press Temperature
Most rhinestone transfers from Glitzy Bling Transfers press at 300–350°F (149–177°C). The exact temperature is listed in the pressing instructions included with every transfer. The most common setting across the range is 335°F.
Do not guess — always follow the product-specific pressing instructions included with your transfer. Different transfer types (rhinestone, glitter, holographic vinyl, DTF) have different optimal temperatures.
Pre-Pressing Your Garment
Before placing your transfer, pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds at your pressing temperature. This step:
- Removes moisture from the fabric (moisture prevents proper adhesion)
- Removes wrinkles that would cause uneven transfer application
- Pre-warms the fabric so heat penetrates evenly during the actual press
Never skip pre-pressing — it’s one of the most impactful steps for adhesion quality.
🔄 Step 3: Position Your Transfer (Rhinestone-Side Down)
Rhinestone transfers are applied face-down (rhinestone-side down) on the garment. The carrier sheet faces up. This is the opposite of how the design looks when finished — don’t flip it the wrong way.
- Place the transfer in your measured position, rhinestone-side against the fabric
- The carrier sheet (white or clear backing) faces up toward the heat press platen
- Double-check positioning before closing the press — once pressed, repositioning is not possible
- For glitter and vinyl transfers, follow the orientation instructions included with your specific transfer

⏱️ Step 4: Press — Time, Temperature & Pressure
Time
Most rhinestone transfers press for 15–20 seconds. The exact time is listed in the pressing instructions with your transfer. Do not exceed the recommended time — over-pressing can damage rhinestone adhesive or scorch fabric.
Pressure
Rhinestone transfers require firm, even pressure. On most clamshell or swing-away presses, aim for medium-to-firm pressure — enough that you feel resistance when closing the press, but not so forceful that you’re straining to close it.
Uneven pressure is the most common cause of partial adhesion failures — where some rhinestones bond well and others pop off after washing. If you’re experiencing this, check that your press platen is level and that your garment is flat with no bunching underneath.
Silicone Pad
Place a silicone pad or Teflon sheet on top of the carrier sheet before pressing. This distributes pressure evenly across all the rhinestones and protects the carrier sheet from direct platen contact. It’s especially important for transfers with mixed stone sizes (e.g., SS6 and SS10 rhinestones in the same design).
❄️ Step 5: Cool Peel vs. Hot Peel — Know Which Your Transfer Requires
This is the step that most beginners get wrong. Peeling at the wrong temperature is one of the most common causes of rhinestones coming off with the carrier sheet.
Cool Peel (most rhinestone transfers)
Allow the transfer to cool completely before peeling the carrier sheet. The adhesive needs to set as it cools — pulling the carrier while the transfer is still warm pulls the rhinestones with it.
Hot Peel (some glitter and vinyl transfers)
Some glitter and vinyl transfers specify a hot or warm peel — peeling the carrier immediately after pressing while still hot. The instructions included with your transfer will specify which method to use.
Rule: always read and follow the pressing instructions included with your specific transfer. Never assume cool or hot peel based on another transfer you’ve used.

💕 Step 6: Inspect & Re-Press if Needed
After peeling, inspect the transfer under good lighting:
- All rhinestones should be flat against the garment with no lifting edges
- No rhinestones should have come away on the carrier sheet
- The design area should feel slightly raised but securely bonded to the fabric
If you notice any rhinestones that appear loose or slightly lifted at the edges, replace the carrier sheet (or use a Teflon sheet), re-position over the area, and re-press for 5–10 seconds. Do not re-press without a cover sheet as direct platen contact can damage rhinestone facets.
🧹 Care Instructions After Pressing
- Wait 24 hours before washing — give the adhesive time to fully cure before the first wash
- Turn garment inside-out to wash — protects rhinestones from abrasion in the wash cycle
- Cold or warm wash only — avoid hot water washes which can weaken adhesive over time
- Tumble dry low or air dry — high heat in the dryer can loosen rhinestone adhesive
- Do not dry clean — dry cleaning chemicals can damage both rhinestones and glitter finishes
- Do not iron directly over rhinestones — if ironing is needed, use a pressing cloth and avoid the transfer area
⚠️ Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
| Problem | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Rhinestones coming off with carrier | Peeled too hot (cool-peel transfer) | Allow to cool completely before peeling |
| Partial adhesion / some stones loose | Uneven pressure or insufficient time | Check press is level; re-press with silicone pad |
| Transfer not adhering at all | Moisture in garment or wrong side up | Pre-press garment; confirm rhinestone-side faces down |
| Scorched fabric under transfer | Temperature too high or time too long | Follow product pressing instructions exactly; reduce temp for synthetic fabrics |
| Rhinestones falling off after washing | Hot wash or insufficient press time | Wash inside-out on cold; ensure full press time on initial application |
| Transfer placed in wrong position | Skipped measuring step | Always measure and use a placement guide for team orders |
